Cisco IE 5000 Industrial Switch Buying and Lifecycle Guide

The Cisco IE 5000 is a rugged rack-mount industrial aggregation switch designed for high-bandwidth networks in manufacturing, utilities, transport, mining, oil and gas, city surveillance and other harsh environments. It combines copper PoE access, fibre aggregation and Layer 2/Layer 3 capabilities in a resilient 1RU platform.

IE-5000-16S12P4 x 1G SFP12 FE/GE SFP12 FE/GE PoE/PoE+

Both models provide 28 ports. The 12S12P-10G is the higher-bandwidth option, while the 16S12P serves designs where 1G uplinks are sufficient.

Performance and industrial design

  • Rugged rack-mount construction for harsh environments
  • Operating range designed for industrial temperature conditions
  • Conformal coating for dust and moisture protection
  • Layer 2 and Layer 3 line-rate aggregation
  • Industrial redundancy, timing and multicast capabilities
  • Copper PoE/PoE+ for cameras, access points and other powered endpoints

IE-5000-12S12P-10G or IE-5000-16S12P?

Choose the 12S12P-10G when the backbone requires 10 Gigabit capacity, multiple high-bandwidth uplinks or aggregation of video and industrial traffic. Choose the 16S12P when four 1G uplinks are adequate and the project prioritizes compatibility with an established Gigabit architecture.

PoE and power-supply planning

Cisco lists different PoE budgets according to the installed 150W or 250W power-supply combination. Determine the required load from the actual endpoint datasheets and include reserve capacity. Dual supplies can improve resilience and increase available power, but the exact configuration must be validated in the bill of materials.

Licensing and software

IE 5000 models ship with a LAN Base feature set and can support more advanced IP Services capabilities through the appropriate licence. Projects requiring OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, multicast routing, VRF-Lite or advanced security should confirm licence entitlement and supported software before purchase.

Optics and accessories checklist

  • Correct SFP or SFP+ speed for each interface
  • Wavelength, fibre type and distance compatibility
  • Industrial-temperature optics where required
  • Primary and redundant rugged power supplies
  • Rack hardware, grounding and cable management
  • Software licence and support coverage
  • Spare optics and power modules for critical sites

Lifecycle status

Cisco identifies the IE 5000 series as end-of-sale. The published end-of-support date is 31 July 2029. Existing systems can continue to operate, but buyers should evaluate remaining support time, software access, spare availability and the migration plan before expanding the installed base.

Replacement planning

A replacement is not simply a port-for-port choice. Document 10G requirements, PoE load, industrial certifications, fibre plant, routing protocols, multicast, timing, redundancy and cybersecurity controls. Current Cisco industrial platforms may require different optics, power or licensing, so validate the full BOM rather than only the chassis model.

For lower-density access switching, see our Cisco industrial switch comparison. For another rack-mount option, review the Cisco IE 4010 guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Cisco IE 5000 still sold by Cisco?

No. Cisco lists the series as end-of-sale, although support continues according to the published lifecycle schedule.

Which IE 5000 model supports 10G uplinks?

The IE-5000-12S12P-10G provides four uplinks that can operate at 1G or 10G depending on the installed optics.

Does the IE 5000 support PoE+?

Yes. Both principal models provide twelve copper PoE/PoE+ ports, with the usable power budget determined by the power-supply configuration.

What should a used-unit quotation include?

It should identify the exact PID, serial details, hardware condition, software and licence state, power supplies, SD card, rack accessories, optics, test results and warranty.
