Cisco IE 4010 vs IE 5000: Models, Ports and Replacement

Cisco IE 4010 vs IE 5000 is primarily a comparison between industrial access and higher-capacity aggregation requirements. Both families are rugged rack-mount platforms, but their uplinks, bandwidth and best-fit network roles differ.

Choose IE 4010 for access density

The IE-4010-4S24P is the better fit when the design has up to 24 powered copper endpoints such as cameras, wireless access points or industrial devices. The IE-4010-16S12P shifts the balance toward fibre, making it useful for distributed plants and sites with longer optical links.

Choose IE 5000 for aggregation

The IE 5000 family is designed for aggregation, richer backbone connectivity and higher traffic volumes. The IE-5000-12S12P-10G adds four 1/10G uplinks and substantially more switching capacity than a Gigabit-only design. The IE-5000-16S12P is suitable where 1G uplinks remain sufficient.

Bandwidth and traffic planning

Calculate the real aggregate load rather than comparing only port counts. CCTV bitrates, wireless traffic, multicast streams, industrial protocols and replication traffic can create bursts. Include growth and failure scenarios where traffic may move to fewer surviving links.

PoE comparison

Both families include PoE/PoE+ models, but available power depends on the selected power supplies. The IE-4010-4S24P supports the largest number of copper powered endpoints in this comparison. The IE 5000 models provide twelve copper PoE ports and place greater emphasis on fibre aggregation.

Fibre and optics

Document every link by speed, single-mode or multimode fibre, wavelength, connector and distance. The IE-5000-12S12P-10G requires compatible SFP+ optics for 10G operation. Fibre density alone is not enough; transceiver support and environmental ratings must also match.

Routing, redundancy and licensing

Map the required Layer 3 protocols, multicast, ring resiliency, timing and security functions. Advanced features may depend on the installed software licence and release. A replacement project should not assume that an old perpetual entitlement automatically transfers to a new platform.

Lifecycle considerations

The IE 5000 series is end-of-sale and Cisco lists 31 July 2029 as its end-of-support date. The IE 4010 should also be evaluated against the current Cisco industrial portfolio before a new standard is approved. Existing deployments may justify compatible spares, while greenfield projects usually benefit from a current-platform comparison.

Migration checklist

  • Export configurations and document VLANs, routes and access policies.
  • Record all copper, fibre and PoE endpoints.
  • Verify optic compatibility with the replacement platform.
  • Check rack space, airflow, grounding and power inputs.
  • Map licences and software subscriptions.
  • Test redundancy and rollback before production cutover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between IE 4010 and IE 5000?

IE 4010 models emphasize industrial access density, while IE 5000 models emphasize aggregation and, on the 12S12P-10G, higher-speed backbone links.

Which model supports the most PoE endpoints?

The IE-4010-4S24P provides 24 copper PoE/PoE+ ports, the highest copper-port count among the models compared here.

Which model has 10G?

The IE-5000-12S12P-10G provides four uplinks capable of 1G or 10G operation with appropriate SFP/SFP+ modules.

Should an existing IE 5000 be replaced immediately?

Not automatically. Assess support dates, software risk, spare availability, business criticality and migration cost. Cisco lists support through 31 July 2029 for the series.
