Description
The Lenovo Storwize V5000 is a midrange enterprise storage array designed to deliver flexible, scalable, and virtualized storage for growing data center environments. Originally part of IBM’s Storwize family and later supported by Lenovo, it is built to handle rapid data growth while maintaining performance and cost efficiency.
From a hardware perspective, the V5000 uses a dual-controller (dual node canister) architecture with mirrored cache, ensuring high availability and redundancy. It is available in both 2.5-inch (SFF) and 3.5-inch (LFF) configurations, supporting a mix of SSDs, high-performance SAS drives, and nearline HDDs for hybrid storage deployment.
The system architecture is based on virtualized block storage, allowing it to pool internal and external storage resources into a single unified system. This enables better resource utilization and simplified management across heterogeneous environments.
In terms of scalability, the V5000 can expand significantly:
- Up to 480 drives per system via expansion enclosures
- Up to 960 drives in clustered configuration
- Supports multiple expansion units for capacity growth without downtime
Connectivity options include:
- Fibre Channel (8Gb FC)
- iSCSI (1Gb / 10Gb)
- SAS backend connectivity
The platform supports advanced storage features such as:
- Thin provisioning
- Snapshots and replication
- RAID and distributed RAID
- Storage virtualization (external storage integration)
Typical use cases include:
- Virtualization environments (VMware, Hyper-V)
- Database and transactional workloads
- Backup and disaster recovery
- Mid-size enterprise SAN deployments
The V5000 is designed for continuous 24/7 operation, with redundant power supplies, cooling, and hot-swappable components to ensure maximum uptime.
Key Features:
- Hybrid storage (SSD + HDD support)
- Dual-controller architecture with mirrored cache
- Scalable up to 480 drives (960 in cluster)
- Supports FC, iSCSI, and SAS connectivity
- Advanced virtualization and data management features
